5th of November, Bonfire Night and Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder PlotGuy Fawkes is the most famous of a group of conspirators who plotted to blow up the King and the house of Lords. The plot was foiled when one of the conspirators attempted to warn a relation not to go to the House of Lords on that day, and Fawkes was caught red handed in the cellar below the Lords where the gunpowder had been stockpiled. The official celebration of the failure of the famous Gunpowder Plot was ordered by King James I, and the practices of lighting fires on 5th November spread from it's origins in London to all of Britain and its colonies. Traditional activities include fireworks displays, consumption of treacle toffee, and bonfires on which effigies of the plotters (and especially Guy Fawkes) are annually burned.
